The Committee for Sydney says Greater Sydney could save around $1 billion annually in health costs by increasing access to tree canopy and nature. More trees could reduce heat impacts, improve cardiovascular and mental health, and create cooler, more liveable communities. The report proposes interconnected greenways, particularly through Western Sydney, using publicly owned land and waterways. Tree canopy currently covers only 21.7% of Greater Sydney, well below the NSW target of 40% by 2036, and is unevenly distributed, with Western Sydney receiving far less access than wealthier northern suburbs.
