The article argues that Western Sydney's housing crisis is also a climate crisis. As population growth drives rapid suburban expansion, many new developments lack sufficient tree canopy, green infrastructure and climate-responsive design. Combined with climate change, these factors intensify the urban heat island effect, exposing residents to more frequent and severe heatwaves. Poorly designed homes require greater reliance on air conditioning, increasing household energy costs and disproportionately affecting lower-income families, older people and those with existing health conditions. The article contends that solving the housing shortage requires more than building additional homes; governments, planners and developers must prioritise heat-resilient design through increased urban greening, cooler building materials, energy-efficient housing, and planning policies that create healthier, safer and more liveable communities
